* what environment are you running this in?
* what is the use case, short sessions, or continuous?
* what is plugged into the Pi?
Automotive is an fairly extreme environment (as Tesla found out when they spec'ed consumer grade displays). Where I lurk, temps swing from -40C to over +50C, when parked in the sun. Humidity gets close to 100%. On top of that as noted by thagrol, input power is very dirty with a huge voltage range. Floating off an inline battery is an easy solution if you can find one that fits your usecase, that can deal with the environmental conditions. Does the solution need to deal with any battery management to avoid flattening the main battery, or does it only have to operate with the car running.
