I was using dvgrab as it seems to be the only thing recommended for DV/HDV and linux. However I would have thought I could get VLC to play from the device. So far no luck. A quick Google suggests people have done this by using the Capture from Directshow option but in Linux this is not an option. There is a capture from Video Camera but then there is a list of devices `/dev/video*` and I cannot get any further with it. VLC is such a behemoth that I wouldn't know where to start with capturing/stream from Firewire but if you have any advice I'll try it as it may offer us a more efficient option than dvgrab which is recording software really, as opposed to viewing/playing.
