I am having the same problem: attach an external usb drive (either a My Passport or a Toshiba) to my Rpi5. Boot up and the drive or drives are seen in the file manager, but when double clicking either one produces an "An Operation is already pending" msg.
Have taken both drives to a WIN10 machine, chkdsk no problems.
Additionally, when the Pi is powered on with either or both drives attached, I can not reboot, shutdown or log out via the menu. I have to use the sudo shutdown command and even then it appears to not fully shutdown, the Plythmonuth power service is displayed in the lower left of the screen (for beyond 2 minutes...in fact it does not go off - it stays displayed).
I have reinstalled and updated the Rpi OS several times....still have the same problem.
One other odd data point. This issue started when I powered on my Rpi5 after it had been off for several weeks. Prior to that, I had no problems with attaching (automounted) these same two USB drives.
Was there an update that injected an error?
Is there a solution to this problem?
Appreciate in advance any help on this issue.
