General discussion • Creating an image file from an existing boot drive

I've successfully installed my OS on a left over 250 GB sata SSD with a USB adapter. I'm now able to boot from this drive with must faster results than from an SSD card. Using a Pi 4 w/ 4 GB RAM. However I'm still experimenting and would like to try different scenarios without losing my current file system. I want to wipe this drive clean and be able to get it restored.

The Raspberry Pi Imager can successfully create a bootable image on an sd card or a USB a drive. But I need the reverse. I need an app that will create an image from my USB SSD including both bootfs and rootfs. There's a Windows app that does this, but don't fully trust it. I'd rather use a Raspberry Pi or Linux solution instead.

Any ideas?
