This may give you some idea what the problem is.Also, have you carefully counted the LED flashes and checked the meaning, based on reading the fine manual?

Last, but not least. What voltage is the TTL on your TTL to USB adapter. Most of these are 5V, but the Raspberry Pi uses 3V3. Hopefully that hasn't caused any damage....
