results in a nil response. so perhaps wayfire/wayland is not the default compositor in Bullseye? I first installed bookworm but found the IO very buggy and unreliable. all the issues cleared up in bullseye.

Bullseye defaults to using X11 not wayland so instructions for wayland aren't going to work. It's also why you don't have a wayfire.ini.
