As for the Pi5 GPIO they will never toggle as fast as in previous generations due to PCIe latency. I see why RP went with the RP1 in order to not have to purchase new IP with every process change, however I prefer on SoC logic blocks for GPIO, I2C, SPI, etc...
I use a TON of i2c connected relay boards, analog boards, digital input boards and specialized sensors. However, I don't think the latency is going to be a huge issue for me... I use my Pi4Bs as Microcontrollers, but I'm not doing anything that requires super high speeds. Once we get the GPIO and i2c stuff straightened out with the PI and the nodejs libraries, I'll look forward to adopting the Pi5 for my Node-Red projects.
