I spent days trying to get my 1 TB Western Digital external hard drive to mount on my RPi5 with Raspberry Pi desktop. The HD worked well for years on my old RPi4. But it would not work on RPi5. I even went out and bought a powered hub for it even though the RPi4 setup used direct plug-in from the HD.
I was almost about to start a new topic here with reams of terminal information, when I did my diligence and found your answer. I did your suggestion and rebooted and ALL IS WELL!
