[Update] Thanks for both of your suggestions.

I’ve now just managed to test these solutions after having to redo my pi install from scratch and it taking till now just to get video playing on the display again!

For the colour depth, I couldn’t quite be sure what bit depth my h.264 file was exporting as, as they are generally supposed to 10 bit and RGB444 - RGB666 ranges from 12 to 24 bit - which sounds far higher than my file would be.

I also attempted to install the KMS driver but could only try the 'full' version rather than the 'lite' but that just stopped anything displaying on my waveshare display after reboot.

In the end I tried darkening the gamma and upping the brightness on the video file itself and that made the artefacts disappear! All very odd as everywhere within the black area registered as the same colour.
