To get better performance I think you would need to persist with the previously mentioned approach.
There are three packages that include h.265 support on a desktop PiOS install. Perhaps installing these with apt would get past your error, but it would be easier to grab another sd card and install the desktop version. A full desktop PiOS will still function headless.
I’ll check on the h.265 packages and report back.
In the meantime, have you updated the software with sudo apt update, and sudo apt full-upgrade, ?
