Troubleshooting • Re: Raspberrypi 5 freeze randomly and verry often

My freezes are not related to RAM, because I have one working setup (128 GB SSD + USB adapter) without any freezes at all.

My experience is that external ssd or nvme solutions are quite finicky. (Only 1 out of 5 combinations of drives and adapters is working on my side without hangs.)

I am a little bit sad, because I love my clean desk setup with the Pi 5, but i would hesitate to recommend this setup of Pi 5 and external storage solution to anybody based on my experience for now.

There is an ongoing speculation in another thread that the freezes with external storage solutions only started for the them with the recent kernel. We will see how this will evaluate. I hope the freezes can be solved on the software side perhaps.
I also would not recommend a Pi to any "novice" user of computers to be honest. Pi is for us "tinkerers". It is not a plug and play computer.

Freezes however were present for me from the very beginning of my Purchase of Pi-5 (December). I don't think it is the new kernel. The external storage solutions (the USB adapters), just like you said, is a hit or miss situation. However, as the Pi now has a pcie port, it should be relatively easy to use a nvme ssd, but of course that will require another adapter.
Tell that to my 84 year old father who uses a Pi400 every day.

It most certainly IS a plug-and-play computer for most people. This freezing issue is unusual , most people don't see it, I certainly don't (with a NVME drive attached via M.2 HAT)
