I had lots of problems using SSD on my Pi 5. See my benchmarking report - viewtopic.php?t=363656.
My SSDs use between 0.5 and 0.6 amps. Maximum Pi 4 USB (and other things?) current is said to be 1.2 amps. I just tried plugging two SSDs into a Pi 4 and a low power message was displayed with the second drive going off line. If in doubt about USB power overload, obtain a powered hub.
My Pi 4 CPU used 1 amp running a stress test using all four cores.
