So turns out that, even though I had switched my locale to en_CA as it should be, en_GB was still installed. Using raspi-config I was able to completely remove the unnecessary locale, which fixed the issue. Hopefully anyone else who experiences this will find this helpful. I'm still baffled as to how this happened but at least I now know how to fix it.
