Fido just put in a request for an Nvidia RTX 5090 with the explanation that modern frameworks require an AI code assistant to be productive. My suspicion is the dog developer actually plans to play AAA video games and productively will go down if that's even possible.
The 6-core Ryzen desktop I put together during the epidemic for remote teaching has 32GB. The older dual-core Athlon was going into swap when Zoom, Firefox, Jupiter, Julia, Xournal and the electronic textbook were open at the same time and needed replacement. 32GB was a good balance between cost and future proofing.
My impression is 16GB would have been fine.
