This is with a Raspberry Pi 4B, Buster, SD card 32GB. All the same as a year ago when I last made this image recovery on an SD card when it worked flawlessly....
image-backup has no involvement with passwords and there have been no similar reports in something like eight years now.
Please describe your environment (which model Raspberry Pi, which version of Raspberry Pi OS, what storage devices are in use, etc.) and give step-by-step instructions for reproducing the issue.
When making an SD (32GB) again from the same image I still do get this password request on start-up of the newly image-restored SD card.
I then downgraded Raspberry Pi to a previous version (v1.7.3): same issue
Next I tried with Rufus: same issue.
Next I followed this advice here viewtopic.php?t=333248 and added an empty ssh.txt file as well as the described userconf.txt file to the SD card, still the same issue: a password still is requested on startup and 'raspberry' (my standard Raspberry password) nor 'pi' nor blanc will do.
