So I really just want the screen to go black and by that I mean that I want the backlight to be off so that it won't keep me awake. I originally tried shutting the display off using xrandr. That worked when my monitor was a 28" computer monitor, but now that I switched to a larger TV, when I shut the display off, the TV displays a bright "No Signal" screen. This is why I switched strategies to dimming the brightness to zero because when I do that, the TV doesn't show a "No Signal" screen.
