Looks like he has a Snekboard with an Atmel ARM MCU. So there should be some kind of HAL to match the Arduino target and the Atmel ARM target.
Snekboard doesn't even identify the Atmel chip -- I think his is a STEM education centric worldview. Focus on STEM play, engineering details are the adult things and leave it out first.
Very nice, but it will be hard to recruit followers. So many of the 40 nm class MCU around now, and it ain't gonna gain much traction when people have MicroPython and CircuitPython where they can find example and libraries very easily (especially display libraries etc).
