You get air flow problems with small holes. Turbulence. After expanding to a certain size, you get a shaft of air moving at full speed.

Air rises with heat. A flat case has very little air movement because the height difference is too small. Turning the case side on increases the vertical distance between inlet and outlet, increasing convection. Turn your case on one side and punch big holes top and bottom.

Get the cardboard tube left over when you finish a roll of toilet paper. Remove case top. Glue tube to to fan to create an inlet duct. Place the case on the side. The inlet duct will draw in cool air. The fan will pump the cool air into the case and the hot air will go out through those holes you drilled in the sides.

Paint the inlet duct white or Pi red.
