Troubleshooting • Pi5 RTC not setting correct time on boot up

I have a Pi5 with the official RTC battery plugged in, but the system clock still looses time when the Pi is powered down. The Pi is set up as a wifi access point, so it can't reach an NTP server on boot up.

dmesg | grep rtc shows:

[ 0.379445] rpi-rtc soc:rpi_rtc: trickle charging enabled at 3000000uV
[ 0.385251] rpi-rtc soc:rpi_rtc: registered as rtc0
[ 0.386769] rpi-rtc soc:rpi_rtc: setting system clock to 1970-01-02T11:14:34

plus some other stuff caught by the grep that is not relevant

vcgencmd pmic_read_adc BATT_V gives:
BATT_V volt(25)=3.01538200V

So as far as I can tell, the battery is working, but the RTC is giving a time close to the Unix Beginning of Time, which is perhaps getting ignored by the OS as it is too far in the past (?). Maybe the time on the RTC needs to be set? Any suggestions?
