Unfortunately my euphoria was short lived…..! As dusk arrived, I spotted the Moon through a layer of cloud that seemed to be dissolving, and took the opportunity of setting up my Astro equipment for a live session test. With the RPi5 and my laptop around 3m apart, it was immediately clear that there were problems. After issuing a command, the screen would frequently freeze, occasionally refresh automatically after a number of seconds, but usually remain frozen until I shut down Real VNC Viewer and reopened it. I then tried TigerVNC Viewer but this gave me just a fixed 1536 x 845 porthole into the 1920x1080 pixels of the headless RPi5, and the same intermittent, hesitating behaviour. TigerVNC viewer did give Line speed estimates of more than 20Mbit/s which sounds adequate for the job in hand. I subsequently tried what I thought was my trusty RPi4/8 with the July OS and early August astro software, but with the same lack of continuity of performance.
The only item I haven’t got a substitute for is my laptop (HP Pavilion i7 16GB bought new in April), but I have found similar erratic performance using RealVNC Viewer on an iPad.
