Networking and servers • VPN only for certain programs

Hi,

Im my little LAN I have a headless raspberry which I access via RDP from several Windows and Android clients.

I want a few of the programs running on that RasPi to access the internet using a VPN.

With the standard solution using OpenVPN the RDP connection fails and of course, also the the access to the NAS (via SMB) from the raspi fails.

Is the following a solution to my my problem and if yes, how do I realize it? Or does someone have a better idea?

OpenVPN should create a virtual ethernet interface tun0 which will open a door to the VPN I want to use, but the raspi should by default continue to use eth0 which would not be affected by the VPN. Then I would bind certain programs running on the pi to use tun0 instead of eth0 so that these programs access the internet via the VPN and the rest of the raspi would remain in my LAN like before.

Good idea? Bad idea? How would I actually do that?

Thanks a lot!
