HATs and other add-ons • Re: Can I boot from a Samsung T7 SSD or does it have to be a NVMe?

All the research I've done is mentioning this NVMe hat ssd thing. What are the differences between something like a Samsung T7 SSD and this NVMe thing in terms of performance? Is it possible to boot from a T7 at the moment or only the NVMe?

If it's a USB mass storage class device, USB UAS class device, or SATA device with a USB bridge added it should boot a Pi 3B or later just fine.*

NVMe over USB 3 won't be any faster. NVMe over PCIe will be slightly faster due to not haviong the protcol convesion overheads.

Be aware that M.2 and NVMe are not the same thing. An M.2 drive could be NVMe but it could also be SATA and SATA ones are not compatible with any of the M.2/NVMe boards aimed at the Pi 5.

*: subject to it not needing too much power and you having the correct PSU for the Pi.
