I forgot about fragging. NTFS was heralded as the future. I dived on that, sick as I was of FAT getting corrupted. Turned out, to nobody's surprise, unlike the blurb, NTFS gets fragmented as well. Queue weekend jobs to manage that. It's almost like Redmond told porkies. At least NTFS had a journal to replay.
The only permanent FAT thing I have is the usb stick plugged into my car, with all my music on. I started with root directory named "000". Now I'm on "004". That's 128Gb of memory stick which has corrupted itself from "000"->"003". It's very simple. Don't cycle the ignition quickly. When it goes in the shop, sometimes I forget to unplug it. The mechanics cause corruption. The "infotainment" (I hate that word) system will not realise until I change the root directory name - then die. FAT is so flakey. Ironically the car runs linux but some fool decided it can't access ext filesystems.
