Yes I usually have to try several times to get it to program up for night mode, on mine, the LEDs all flash a few times, if they stay on for several seconds I think it failed, if they flash & go off I think it worked. You then have to tap the middle touch button three times rapidly, which should then put it to sleep until the time you set. I check it's asleep by rattling keys at it, if nothing happens, it's asleep.
