Yes, this is how I should do it.
My hesitation comes from the idea that I want the clone to be the same rootfs as the original. Then it gives me the option to merge a new variant of the clone rootfs (a btrfs subvolume) to the real Pi1.
Already changing contents of /etc/hostname violates that, but I could set the hostname by DHCP dynamically. Then the SSH keys, they relate to an IP address so that will give troubles. I have done tricks via VLAN, so I could keep the same hostname also same IP address. But I cloned also my router and more. Nice exercise but way to complex.
So if I want to use a clone longer term, it will become different from the real Pi1 more and more. It is the same when cloning a VM, you need to maintain it and so on. But I want certain functionality running on diffferent kernels, so then it is needed.
