Though people do have Pico 2 and third-party boards with RP2350A and RP2350B fitted. In regards to A2 vs hypothetical A3, they aren't selling the chips publicly yet.
How many is an unknown - I'd not count the 30,000 or so DefCon badges in that
The Pico 2 is said to be "in full-rate production" so it seems that number will keep rising.
It does, nearly always does, for everyone.I always considered this a beta run ... That kind of stuff happens and I would assume it'll be cleaned up on a respin.
I was assuming there would be an A3 if any issues identified during the Hacker Challenge are considered by Raspberry Pi to warrant that.
My guess was they packaged a few wafers, sold them fitted to Pico 2 and third-party boards, and that is it so far - WIGIG and what happens next depends on pressures of demand and outcome of the challenge.
But, while they fixed many of the issues in RP2040 with B1 and B2 stepping, the ADC issue - RP2040-E11, has never been fixed -- Not that I personally consider it worth fixing for the small gains that would deliver.
I would deem the E9 issue problematic enough to justify an A3 with that fixed, but I may be wrong. If no issues turn up in the challenge to warrant an A3, Raspberry Pi will have to decide whether to stick with the A2 or go for an A3, whether to keep supplying A2 until A3 is available, or suspend production until it is.
I don't expect any E9 fix to be trivial but I'm not an expert in silicon - I'll refrain from the obvious sarcastic corollary about those who delivered what we have. There's also the matter of how easily any issues raised by the challenge can be fixed if they need to be.
