I run Debian Testing on a Pi3B+ in the field, is solar powered and has a 3.5inch HDD via an USB enclosure. Because many unexpected powerlosses, I could benefit from newer tools and kernel, so I changed sources.list from bookworm to testing and disabled raspi.list

You need to know how to dist-upgrade and how a Pi boots. Debian uses Linux kernel mainline naming and for a Pi3B(+) that means different/older DTBs (and no overlays) and different things in config.txt and cmdline.txt. But it is vanilla Debian for the rest, so same as x86_64 servers running Debian.

September 2025 or so you can change sources to RPi ones, reverse the things and then you have RPiOS Trixie, assuming they won't jump to ArchLinux or whatever.
