We had some data from the RAM supplier and were able to change some settings on the 8GB version to improve the access times.Perhaps there was something off, but performance when the system is overlocked is not really what's important in my book, since this is not supported. What's important to me is performance when it's not overclocked....
I don't over clock the systems here either. In this case the over clocking illustrated that something was off between the 4 and 8GB models.
Now that some time has passed It would be nice if someone with both models could check how the updated firmware behaves.
The releases notes for the 2024-08-30 release of the firmware for BCM2712-based Pis says this:So perhaps there was an issue with the firmware not correctly optimising the SDRAM timings for all banks? Or maybe they've just figured out some better settings.Optimized SDRAM timings for Pi5 8GB (latest)
Optimize all-banks/per-bank refresh timings for Pi5 8GB
