About the PS ...
A double-banger issue with the file transfers when connected to the PC ... of course Image may be NSFW.

... turns out by connecting to a PC and testing:
(a) the unpowered hubs work ... but are unstable connection wise; swapped to using powered hubs
(b) the usb3 cable-extenders from the hubs to the PC (tried a few, not just the ones I was using) all caused the file transfers to slow to a definite snails pace, like 1/30 th of the speed.
On the PC at least, removing the usb3 cable-extenders and living with short distance between hub and PC/Pi as well as using powered hubs vastly increases reliability and transfer speeds.
Yes I have been advised to use powered hubs but the unpowered TP-LINK ones seemed to work at the time. Oh well.
The (expensive) USB3 cable extenders, and the inexpensive ones, aren't worth a pinch between hub and PC. YMMV.
