Well, if electrical surges are the root cause then a disconnect is inevitable and ensuring that the link comes back up is the only solution available.That however is a workaround. Finding and fixing the root cause would be much better.
(to be clear - what I meant was a software watchdog to reset the USB only, not resetting the whole machine).
We know that there's at least one erratum where certain events on the bus can cause malfunction (and we can't guarantee that an electrical surge won't cause those events), aside from the possibility of the electrical surge causing something that looks like a disconnect even with both ends handing it fully correctly, so there's no option to guarantee operation without disconnect/re-enumerate.
