The resistor pulling drain up to 12V risks destroying your GPIO pin
You can't possibly switch the mosfet in this configuration, you would have to switch the GPIO pin to high impedance, allowing the pullup to do its job, which will bring the GPIO pin to 12V and destroy the GPIO pin.
The gate switching voltage is relative to the source voltage, it is -2V to -4V away from the source ie +8V to +10V relative to 0V
