Minetest on the Raspberry Pi 4 Computer
Minetest is an open source graphics engine featuring voxel graphics providing the player a sandbox gameplay experience, and the player decides how to shape the game world. The purpose of the voxels in the game engine involves remove voxels from the level to manipulate the voxels, with gameplay similar to The SIMS developed by Maxis Studios, and was published by Electronic Arts in 2000 without the micromanaging features or economy system. You will be able to manipulate the entire world when you have manufactured the resources necessary to explore the world, and the base Minetest game features only Creativity Mode, which means the base game will not include any enemies.
In the base Minetest Game, your enemy will be the environment, because that is the only way to injure your character in the game. To fully explore the content designed for Minetest, you will need to modify the base Minetest game with the installation of mods. Minetest will soak up all of your computer RAM, and computers with less than 8 GB of RAM will expect to see stuttering as you proceed through the procedurally generated worlds. The game reminds me of Open Transport Tycoon Deluxe OpenTTD, which is a game that starts out very slow based on your gameplay settings, and when you accumulate enough resources in the game, the pace of the game increases.
Minetest has a base game called Minetest Game, which is a mod for Minetest that will include the basic features for the base game, as Minetest Game was designed to be a base for Minetest mods. There are numerous Minetest mods to choose from, but the gameplay features included in this build guide are based on the unmodded version of Minetest Game. While Minetest Game will not appear to be a challenging game, the game worlds are full of caves to explore, and the worlds are large enough to get lost without warning. There is a Developer Mode included with Minetest, but is not actually a game.
Minetest has numerous options to adjust in the Settings menu to improve either the graphics or the gameplay experience, and is compatible with OpenGL 3.1 Graphics Processors. Turning the graphics to maximum settings is possible on the Raspberry Pi 4 computer, but the performance will be unplayable. Running the game at 1920 X 1080 resolution is relatively playable, but the game will stutter very often with a chance of freezing the computer. For a smoother gameplay experience with Minetest on the Raspberry Pi 4 Computer, I recommend 1280 X 720 screen resolution with all graphics settings enabled excluding shaders.
The shaders will improve the graphics quality, but the graphics will not improve substantially or perhaps Minetest requires OpenGL 3.3 support to enable all graphic options, and I wouldn't know the answer. Turning off all graphic settings will improve performance, and there are advance options to adjust to either increase the graphics quality or improve the graphics performance in much greater detail. While there are numerous mods designed for Minetest you will be able to install with the built in content installer, the mods will have different system requirements, and the larger mods will not be compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 Computer, because the mods will not load.
Minetest is completely playable with Minetest Game without any mods, and will provide the best gameplay, and performance in comparison to the mods that I have tested. There are no enemies or non playable characters (NPCS) in Minetest Game, and the only objective in Minetest Game is to explore the world. There are mods you are able to add to Minetest Game to increase the gameplay variety, but the majority of this build guide will be based on Minetest Game without any mods, and Minetest Game is still being updated. Minetest has multiplayer support, and I assume multiplayer will have unplayable performance with the Raspberry Pi 4 Computer.
If you are having difficulties understanding the gameplay of Minetest Game or get stuck, I recommend searching for gameplay tutorials on the internet or even consider starting a new game, and there is a Minetest Wiki for Minetest. The first time I played Minetest, 2 years ago, I was completely lost in the game until I found out there is a crafting system in the game, which is necessary for the player to progress in the world. You will be able to dig into the ground with your bare hands, but you will not be able to break stone with your hands, and you will be able to break tress with your hands, but the process will be slower in comparison to utilizing equipment to farm resources.
A Stone Pickaxe will break Stone faster compared to a Wood Pickaxe, and will have greater durability, but to craft a Pickaxe, you will need to craft Sticks from Trees. Before descending into a mine, stock up on Wood resources before descending into the tunnels, and search for Apples to heal yourself. Minetest Game is not a real world simulator as you are able to craft resources without tools, there is no stamina meter, and the world is full of caves to explore. The gameplay mechanics will draw you in as you proceed to understand the gameplay features, and exploring caves is the main draw of the game, because the caves contain rare resources which are necessary to craft more powerful equipment.
Minetest Game starts out basic until the demand for manufactured resources increases, because you will need light to explore the caves, and the caves will require a significant number of Torches to light the caves. You will need numerous Axes, Pickaxes, and Shovels to explore the caves as well as a Furnace to build these resources, then you will need a Chest to store all of your equipment including anything else you find exploring the world. As I said before, the gameplay of Minetest Game resembles The SIMS, because you will need to craft furniture, and the furniture eventually becomes an outpost, and with enough resources, you will be able to build multiple outposts.
