Well, took another stab at it and turned out fkms still works with 3B+, unlike the newer models. So got the thing fixed.

But as fkms is on its way out: our technological (and now corporate!) overlords, if you see this and feel so inclined, please fix Bookworm X11 properly. The world is not yet all Wayland.

it's because your living in the past
settings have changed some 3 os versions ago
bookworm is a huge departure from past setups

anything below pi 4/400/5 -2gb will be running X11
otherwise it will run wayland/wayfire
you need to go into raspi-config & select X11 to use on the desktop worthy pi versions.

same with setting vnc resolution raspi-config under display
