Guess it will be difficult when the bitbang pgpiod is not available.
I would either
- use a Pi4 and the library you used till now
or
- attach a raspberry pico using PIO for the uart or doing bitbanging there. Then connect pi5 and pico using tty-serial and using 2 bytes for the 9 bits.
