Of course, I have to manually copy updates to the /boot/firmware partition from NVMe to the USB Key later on. For me, this appears the most simple way to have a system installed on NVMe at this time.

No. You don't.

If you leave the USB drive connected (or use a small SD card) and edit /etc/fstab on the NVMe so it's using the correct PARTUUIDs (the USB drive for /boot/firmware and the NVMe drive for /) things will just work.

In fact you could delete the boot partition from the NVMe drive and it will still work

Any power saving by disconnecting the USB drive is likely to be neglible - once boot has completed the only time the boot partition is accessed is during some updates and when you access it manually.

The safest setup is to have only the boot partition on USB/SD and no boot partition on the NVMe drive.

Lastly, evn though it isn't in active use you shold remember to unmount the boot partition before removing the drive.
